Between the Shadows is Jonni Slater’s new album, out on 7th November 2025
“Sonically, ‘Between the Shadows’ sits at the crossroads of chamber pop, alt-rock, and modern cinematic composition. … The result is an album that feels handcrafted, each note shaped with empathy and intention.” – Mystic Sons
“thoughtful piano and guitar arrangements paired with lyrics that speak with substance and warmth. … a collection rich in storytelling and personal reflection.” – IndieTapes
Songs that explore the bittersweet nature of memory and of the imagination – moments we have to leave behind us and the lives we could have led – as well as empathy and compassion for the experiences of other people and for the fragile natural world around us.
“Between the Shadows thrives on contrast. Its moments of stillness carry as much gravity as its crescendos, and its occasional bursts of rhythm keep the emotional weight from sinking too deep. The production is clean but personal, the kind of balance that invites you to sit with it and let its details slowly surface. There’s a lot to appreciate” – Pitch Perfect
“worth spending time with … music that gives you space to think and doesn’t rush anything” – Beach House
“Between the shadows on the floor they see the light”
The album title is taken from a line in the song How to Build A Cage for Mice. The song is a vision of a life without freedom, where light is defined by the shadows cast by the bars of a cage.
Across the whole album, though, this theme of light and shadow comes back with a more positive perspective; it’s only through knowledge of the shadows that we fully appreciate the light.
