Outside

Outside is the second single from Jonni Slater’s upcoming album, Between the Shadows.

“Only deep in the crowd can we find sanctuary”

Sometimes you’re least conspicuous in the most crowded place. Outside is both a love song to a person, about a moment of first meeting where time slows down and no-one else in the room matters, and a love song to the city, where you can lose yourself in the crowd and still feel a quiet connection to every stranger around you. It’s about finding intimacy in the middle of everything.

The song was originally written a few years ago for a planned musical theatre project, the rest of which should remain lost!

Recording the song:

Although most of this new album features the piano as the lead instrument, this song belonged on guitar. I recorded electric and acoustic guitars at home and layered them with a big bassline using a vintage Roland SH-2 synth. The drum groove in the second half of the song uses a Boss Dr Rhythm DR-110 drum machine from 1983.
