Between the Shadows is Jonni Slater’s new album, out on 7th November 2025
A red-sailed boat gliding gracefully across a mirror-still lake with the endless sky unfolding above. Snow drifting down like the unspoken words between former lovers left lingering in the air. A lone surveillance operative eavesdropping in a darkened room, disconnected from the real lives beyond the snatches of conversations and static. Two figures holding each other tightly, finding love just in time as the last light fades and the seas rise around them.
These are some of the cinematic moments conjured by Jonni Slater’s new album, Between the Shadows. Songs that explore the bittersweet nature of memory and of the imagination – moments we have to leave behind us and the lives we could have led – as well as empathy and compassion for the experiences of other people and for the fragile natural world around us.
“Between the shadows on the floor they see the light”
The album title is taken from a line in the song How to Build A Cage for Mice. The song is a vision of a life without freedom, where light is defined by the shadows cast by the bars of a cage.
Across the whole album, though, this theme of light and shadow comes back with a more positive perspective; it’s only through knowledge of the shadows that we fully appreciate the light.

“a sincerity that leaves a lasting impression” – Direct-Actu.fr
“It starts off fairly translucent with syncopated arpeggios accompanying Jonni’s distinctive vocals but, as the track builds in layers, it becomes decidedly more cinematic, also offering smartly nuanced contrasts, stops, drops and dynamic shifts to keep events moving. Expertly done and impressive.” – Trust the Doc
“Only deep in the crowd can we find sanctuary”
