    Weather Balloons

Like discovering a forgotten radio station playing strange yet familiar songs, Weather Balloons is a cinematic EP from Dora Lachaise and Jonni Slater, inspired by film noir, Nick Cave’s murder ballads and UFO conspiracy theories..

“Weather Balloons, said the officer, go home and try to get some sleep”

    Sign on the Door
    (First single)

“And I wait for you, senses sharp, can never close my eyes…”

“This eerie gem, married to a dark atmosphere and vintage instruments such as dulcitone and omnichord is a memorable slice of class from the Glasgow-based duet’s debut EP” – Martyn Williams, The Herald

“It’s audacious, bold and beautiful” – Saint Martyn, FreshOnTheNet Eclectic Picks

    Braver Than You
    (Second single)

“On that trail beneath a wide open sky, Walked a while beside you…”

“A gorgeous flowing acoustic guitar arpeggio ebbs and flows through the tune … they combine their voices together on the choruses in a lovely, harmonic way.” – York Calling

    Bluer Skies
    (Third single)

“At times I dream of you, you almost become real…”

“a soft cushion and a bit of a pick-me-up” – Lost In The Manor

Dora Lachaise became fascinated with Victorian ghost stories and cemeteries after moving next door to Arnos Vale Cemetery in Bristol. From her attic, she overlooked its overgrown grounds, with crumbling headstones, angels and obelisks. “I’m attracted to the mystery of forgotten stories, and things we can’t measure,” says Dora. “It’s that sense of mystery I try to instil in my music too.”

Jonni Slater paints dark scenes with his warm, husky vocals and vintage keyboards. There’s a distinct cinematic quality that runs like a red thread through all his work. “I often see images like movie scenes in my head when I’m writing,” he says. “I aim to soundtrack the mood and events.”

    Weather Balloons EP launch

The EP was launched on 8th June 2023 with an audiovisual show at The Old Hairdresser’s, Glasgow, featuring live music and video projections, as seen in previous performances at the Delft Fringe Festival in the Netherlands and the Redcatch Club, Bristol.

“there’s a definite alchemy when they perform together which will appeal to wide audiences” – IsThisMusic.com

  • Into the Unknown

    Into the Unknown

A simple, percussive backing made from items found in my kitchen. Feelings of unease about what may lie ahead for all of us, ending with a note of hope for the world we rebuild after the waves have receded.

    Into the Unknown

“Once we sailed in golden sun, now against the wind…”

“the blended layers of vocals on the lower register feel like they’re pulling you down below the surface of some inky waters in one moment before the lead vocal soars away in the next, carrying you along with it.. …it feels like being lost, but somewhere I belong.” – Fenris Music

B-side Further to Our Letter of the Fourth is a song about bureaucratic letters, which deliver news of potentially devastating impact to the reader with the cold tone of indifference and a smokescreen of formality.

“Dressed in the language of officialdom, it is a call for empathy and kindness.” – Bakeneko

    CHROMA-FI

Jonni linked up with Bath (Somerset) based composer and performer Edward Bettella to work on music for short films under the name Chroma-Fi.

    SWAT
    Dir: Sam Coombes

The film pits a grumpy man against a tiny winged foe, with explosive consequences…

They collaborated with director Sam Coombes on two short films, “SWAT” and “An Absolute Mare”, and soundtracked a short psychological drama by writer director Yana Ivantcheva called “It’s a Girl”, which was a Jury Special Section Winner at The Gladiator Film Festival 2021 and a semi-finalist at Make Art Not Fear 2021. They also won the Sensoria Film Festival scoring contest in 2020 with a tense re-scoring of the MUBI trailer for Suspiria.

    KAIJU

Jonni commissioned illustrator and comic artist Steve Sims to produce artwork for the Not Giving Up single, which he did in his own inimitable style. Steve also offered his earlier comic book “Kaiju: Fire and Grimstone” and Jonni collaborated on a video and score for it. For fans of anime, Godzilla and Pacific Rim.

    BECCI WALLACE

Becci is an incredible songwriter from Glasgow. Jonni played piano on several tracks on her new album “After the Fog… Air”, produced by Steg G, which came out in April 2025. He also co-wrote the song “Take It to the Radio”. He has been performing live with Becci since 2023.

    MAAIKE SIEGERIST

Jonni and Maaike have been performing live together for about 9 years, both in the UK and in Maaike’s home country, the Netherlands. Her jazz-infused folk songwriting has challenged Jonni’s playing and expanded his palette of chords substantially! Maaike is currently working on an EP of space-themed songs, which promises to be some of her most beautiful work yet. Maaike bears a striking resemblance to both Dora Lachaise and to the lead singer of Scottish prog band Long Earth.
